Have you ever found yourself creating big resolutions for the new year, but struggle turning them into reality? Having trouble forming healthy work habits?
We’re here to tell you the key to accomplishing them; developing simple, yet proactive habits (and sticking to them) for your every day.
Below, we outline 5 healthy work habits to implement in your daily life to actually accomplish your goals this year!
1. Decide What You Actually Want To Accomplish
Determine what you want to accomplish by evaluating your priorities. Find what is most important to you and ask yourself why you want to do this. By establishing the big picture, you’ll become more motivated to crush your goal.
For example, if your goal is to be healthier, what does that mean to you? Is it because you want to prevent future health problems? Look better? Feel stronger?
Find your “why” behind each goal; when you evaluate your goals based on this, you’ll keep yourself accountable by choosing the key ones for the year.
2. Create a Personal Mission Statement
You’ve probably heard many company mission statements. But what about your own?
A personal mission statement defines who you are as a person (or as a team member where you work). It also identifies your purpose, whether that’s in the office or simply in life. It explains how you aim to pursue that purpose, and why it matters so much to you.
According to author and career coach Dan Miller, a solid personal mission statement should include three things:
- Your skills and abilities (what you like to do)
- Your personality traits (how you operate)
- Your values, dreams and passions (why you want to excel)
When crafting yours, keep it simple yet specific enough, so it will be easy to remember and follow. Here’s an example of a personal mission statement from Amanda Steinberg, founder of Daily Worth:
“To use my gifts of intelligence, charisma, and serial optimism to cultivate the self-worth and net-worth of women around the world.”
3. Take It One Task At A Time
Instead of multitasking and trying to overload yourself with to-do’s and goals, take everything one task at a time. Yes, we know you’re thinking; “easier said than done.” But what if we told you it can actually be just as easy?
Create a list on paper, a phone-app, or a calendar of realistic things you can accomplish that are time bound.
The same thing goes for long term goals. If you want to achieve three different goals this year, start with one, finish it, and move on to the next.
The more you overwhelm yourself with, the more likely you are to quit everything altogether. Keep it simple and single-task!
4. Acknowledge Your Strengths And Weaknesses
Everyone has things they do well in, as well as things they struggle with. Make a SWOT analysis for your own strengths and weaknesses, as well as opportunities and threats towards you achieving your goals.
Once you establish this, you can then begin working on what you can do to make your strengths even more of an asset to you. Similarly, you can uncover how your weaknesses affect you and your life—and how you can prevent them from interfering with your goals.
5. Create Partnerships
It truly takes a village. Create partnerships with others who have similar goals to you; this will bring more joy and accountability to your journey.
Some easy ways you can start doing this is by:
- Attend (or even coordinate!) after-work social activities
- Attend networking events, such as conferences and industry panels
- Join a club/organization for your industry or interests
By having someone else in the same position, you’ll remain on track and in sight of your goals.
