About shelley klingerman

Shelley Klingerman is a successful entrepreneur, author, marketing professional, and documentary film producer. She is a graduate of Indiana State University and the mother of three children who inspired her to make the documentary Terror in American Schools: Are Your Kids Safe? The film outlines threats and vulnerabilities to our schools, and what can be done to increase security for the nation’s children.

During her research for the film, and from her two decades of working for a large global firm, Klingerman began to understand the need to be vigilant and aware of her surroundings in everyday situations. This sparked a passion to help others learn what they should be aware of when traveling and living their day-to-day lives, and how they can prepare and protect themselves. She compiled her insights — which have been featured in The New York Times — into Vigilance: The Savvy Woman’s Guide to Personal Safety, Self-Protection Measures, and Countermeasures (Niche Pressworks, 2019).

She received Situational Awareness Specialist certification in 2021 and is currently attending the FBI’s Citizen’s Academy.

She is available for speaking engagements, workshops, and experiential learning programs (where she partners with law enforcement and military trainers to deliver an immersive experience in her Prepare-Prevent-Protect philosophy of personal safety). She often brings her expertise to bear as a guest and co-host of popular radio shows and podcasts.

Klingerman’s work extends beyond coaching on personal safety to advising on professional success, as well. She is the managing director of NEXT Studios, a venture studio for entrepreneurs and corporate innovation. She also founded and served as executive director of Launch Terre Haute, a nonprofit business incubator that helps entrepreneurs bring their ideas to fruition.

She holds an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University and is attending the Indiana University Tobias Leadership Fellows Cohort and pursuing Federal Minority Women’s Business certification.

Klingerman also has extensive fitness-training experience, having served for more than 20 years as a certified yoga instructor. She was a group fitness instructor for more than 30 years and a personal trainer for a decade.

She lives in Terre Haute, Ind., with her family.

Book Reviews

Vigilance: The Savvy Woman’s Guide to Personal Safety, Self-Protection Measures, and Countermeasures empowers women to develop the situational awareness and warrior mindset to avoid being victimized – and urges them to model safe behavior and pass it along to loved ones. It unpacks the emotional, mental and physical preparation critical to dissuading predators, and offers self-defense strategies to fend them off should they attack.

You’ll learn how to layer your self-protection measures and apply them to everyday situations, from air travel to riding in an Uber, from choosing a seat in a restaurant to checking into a hotel. You’ll discover practical safety tips on walking with purpose and confidence, visualizing and rehearsing a crisis response well before a crisis occurs and, yes, understanding how to be a hostage who makes it out alive.

Your guides include many top law-enforcement, self-defense and counter-terrorism officials who shared their experience and expertise with me to help you along this journey to Prepare, Prevent and Protect.
