Program Description
Active shooter incidents are happening at alarming rates, as evidenced by the fact that you can’t turn on the news anymore without hearing about at least one event in which someone has caused massive losses of life. A number of these are occurring at the workplace, making this an urgent area to address by individuals who are responsible for employee safety.
Traditionally, individuals trained for these terrifying events have been told that their options are running, hiding, and fighting. While these steps provided a better response than doing nothing, something was still missing.
That’s why Michael Julian created the A.L.I.V.E. Active Shooter Survival Training Program. In this program, he shares that while method (Run, Hide, Fight) is important, without the proper mindset to carry out these steps they can be useless. From his research, he found that under this type of overwhelming stress, most people do nothing or the wrong thing, which is why learning mental preparedness is the first and most important lesson. He also discusses what to do in the first 10 minutes of an attack to increase your chances of survival. This involves following the A.L.I.V.E. survival steps, which are:
- Assess the situation; stop, breathe, and think about what is happens and what action to take next
- Leave if you can, run as far away as possible as quickly as possible, encouraging others to go with you
- Impede the attacker if you can’t leave, become a “hard target” by creating time and space
- Violence; be ready to attack with every ounce of your being, and swarm as a group if you can
- Expose your position carefully when you think it is over, there may still be a threat and you do not want to appear as a threat yourself to law enforcement
When completed in this order and using additional methods Michael teaches, these steps can help employees and business guests better survive an active shooter so they can go home to their loved ones.
Value to Employees
Although most people have an “It won’t happen to me” mentality, Michael teaches that active shooter incidents can happen anywhere at any time. They occur at work, places of worship, schools, and shopping malls. They also happen at all hours of the day.
Teaching your employees how to safely and effectively respond in an active shooter situation cannot only help keep them safer while at work, it also provides life-saving value in all other areas of their life. Additionally, incorporating the trainings that Michael suggests on a regular basis can help your staff work more cohesively as a team, giving them a fighting chance should an active killer ever appear at your door.
